About this deal

Listen to them read the book. Remember to give them lots of praise – celebrate their success! If they can’t read a word, read it to them. After they have finished, talk about the book together. A reading practice book. This will be at the correct phonic stage for your child. They should be able to read this fluently and independently. We use the government validated systematic synthetic phonics programme (SSP) ‘Little Wandle: Letters & Sounds Revised’. The programme is designed to teach children to read from Reception to Year 2, using the skills of decoding and blending sounds together to form words. The Little Wandle programme provides a full progression through all commonly occurring GPCs(sounds), working from simple to more complex, and taking into account the frequency of their occurrence in the most commonly encountered words. We all use the same language, routines and resources to teach children to read so that we lower children’s cognitive load.

A sharing book. Your child will not be able to read this on their own. This book is for you both to read and enjoy together. In Years 2 and 3, we continue to teach reading in the same way as Key Stage 1, for any children who still need to practise reading with decodable books.By moving the colourful cards around on the table, turning it into a game, children will find learning phonics stimulating. This set covers Phases 2 to 5 of the curriculum. Find resources for the other phases here.

Children who are receiving additional phonics ‘keep-up’ sessions read their reading practice book to an adult daily. The Reading Leader and SLT use the audit and prompt cards to regularly monitor and observe teaching; they use the summative data to identify children who need additional support and gaps in learning. o use books matched to the children’s secure phonic knowledge (Big Cat Little Wandle: Letters and Sounds Revised) You can use our Phase 2, 3 and 5 Phonemes Sound Mat as a light warm-up activity to jog the memory before moving onto this fun yet challenging task!We provide a balance of child-led and adult-led experiences for all children that meet the curriculum expectations for ‘Communication and language’ and ‘Literacy’. These include: We use the ‘Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised’ assessments to identify the gaps in their phonic knowledge and teach to these using the keep-up resources at pace. Lesson templates, prompt cards and 'how to' videos ensure teachers all have a consistent approach and structure for each lesson.

The teaching of Phonics is fast-paced, and we encourage all children to actively participate in each lesson, and by encouraging the children to take ownership of their learning we are continuously striving for excellence. By the time children leave Princes Risborough Primary School we want them to be competent and fluent readers who can recommend books to their peers, have a passion for reading a range of genres including poetry, and participate in discussions about books. At Princes Risborough Primary School, we believe that reading is the key to all learning and so the impact of our reading curriculum goes beyond and is embedded across the entire curriculum for our children. Although your child will be taught to read at school, you can have a huge impact on their reading journey by continuing their practice at home. Each reading practice session has a clear focus, so that the demands of the session do not overload the children’s working memory. The reading practice sessions have been designed to focus on three key reading skills:Children across Years 4 – 6 who need additional support will have regular 1:1 reading with decodable books. Alphabet sounds flashcards like these are specifically designed to teach children how to read through the use of phonemes and graphemes instead of memorising the individual letters. This follows the ideas behind the Letters and Sounds program by the Department for Education.

Due to the impact of the Covid 19 pandemic we have adapted our current Phonics programme to meet the needs of the children. Any child who needs additional practice has regular keep-up support, led by a fully trained adult. Keep-up lessons match the structure of class teaching, and use the same procedures, resources and mantras, but in smaller steps with more repetition, so that every child secures their learning.Making something competitive can encourage some children to pay attention and engage. You could challenge children to find objects that begin with a certain sound. They could bring the objects in or take photographs.
