About this deal

Is it “touristy?” Sure, a lot of tourists know about it and probably most of the people who visit are tourists. But, it’s not overcrowded (I don’t think you understand just how huge this place is); it’s not exorbitantly priced; there aren’t people trying to scam you into buying cheap crap; nor will you feel like you’ve been duped after visiting.

So silica mud from the Blue Lagoon looks to be the real deal. But what of the rest of the facial mask’s formula. Well, there’s an unremarkable emollient (ethoxydiglycol oleate) a kind of wax (cetearyl isononanoate) and the potentially irritating laureth-7. But many people may be alarmed by the preservatives, phenoxyethanol and every paraben known to man. I’m not wild about phenoxyethanol, an irritant and possible neurotoxin, but I did notice some new research on parabens from the UK saying that there is “no simple cause and effect relationship” between the use of underarm cosmetics containing parabens and breast cancer”. Having said that, there were parabens in breast tissue of women who didn’t use deodorant and, frustratingly, the jury still seems to be out – aka more research is needed – on whether parabens cause cancer or not.

It has to be said that the Blue Lagoon experience is quite expensive and it will certainly make a dent in your budget. But I really enjoyed my visit to one of Iceland’s most popular tourist attractions, and it’s undoubtedly a must-do when you’re visiting Reykjavik – an unforgettable experience. The Blue Lagoon in Iceland is still a seriously fun, relaxing, and interesting cultural experience out in a less-populated area of Iceland. “Touristy” or not, it’s absolutely worth visiting the Blue Lagoon in Iceland. So get those haters out of your head already! (My advice for today and always.) I also found some research published in Experimental Dermatology that tried to discover what it is about the silica mud and two different microalgae species derived from the Blue Lagoon that makes them good for the skin. The researchers saw that they are capable of inducing gene expression in human epidermal keratinocytes. The algae and silica mud extracts induced collagen and may help with the reduction of transepidermal water loss.. The conclusion was that the bioactives in Blue Lagoon have the capacity to improve "skin barrier function and to prevent premature skin aging". I spent around three hours there, including an excellent lunch in the Lava Restaurant. There are several places to eat at the Blue Lagoon, including the Moss Restaurant and the Retreat Spa Restaurant which is a good opportunity to enjoy some excellent Icelandic cuisine.

If you have booked for the Blue Lagoon Retreat Spa, your entrance fee covers up to five hours in the spa and lagoon. Will the Blue Lagoon ruin your hair? If you’re not planning to have a meal, allowing two hours for your Blue Lagoon ritual would be plenty of time for most people. Lava Restaurant, Blue LagoonFirst, there actually is a Blue Lagoon in Iceland. And it does indeed have white mud that has curative and skin healing properties. Apparently, when the geothermal sea water cools, it becomes supersaturated with silicon and long chains of silicon molecules are formed that eventually precipitate out of the water and form the white mud. The Blue Lagoon also has a unique algae. Research has shown that bathing in the Blue Lagoon and rubbing the silica mud into lesions has positive effects on psoriasis.

The Blue Lagoon will tell you all about the supposed benefits of the geothermal water to those with all sorts of skin ailments including psoriasis and eczema. However, it’s my belief that the Blue Lagoon cures more than just skin diseases. Of all the Blue Lagoon tips I have to dole out, this one is the most important, obviously. The minerals in the water make it great for your skin but a nightmare for your hair. There are also huge vats of silica mud dotted around the lagoon, and you can smear big handfuls of gloopy mud onto your skin. The high silica content in the mud is said to be beneficial for various skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema. When you’re in the water the swirling steam envelops you, giving everything an ethereal, dreamlike quality. The people nearby are barely visible in the mists, and their laughter and voices are strangely muted. The Blue Lagoon (Bláa lónið in Icelandic) is approximately 13 km from Keflavik International Airport and 39 km from Reykjavík. That’s about a 20-minute drive from the airport and a 45-minute drive from Reykjavík. Blue Lagoon Iceland Silica Mud Mask is pure white, which seemed surprising for a mud mask (although having honeymooned in Iceland I can tell you that mud and minerals come in very weird colors indeed). The mask comes in a tube and the white cream is easy to smooth over the skin. Be warned though, when it dries you will look like Casper and frighten small children. After leaving on for 10 minutes and rinsing off, my skin looked very clear and felt super soft. If you’ve got a rental car for your Iceland holiday, you can certainly drive to the Blue Lagoon. Free parking is available outside reception and the gift shop. How to get to Iceland’s Blue Lagoon

Children are allowed in the lagoon but there are age restrictions. Children must be aged 2-years or above due to the mineral content of the water which can affect the delicate skin of babies and very young children. Hear me out: three months before my first trip to Iceland I suffered some nerve damage in my hand due to a freak flying trapeze incident (true story) after which I lost all feeling in my left middle finger down to my palm. The mask arrives as a frozen tablet which you dip in the water, and as it melts, you spread the gel over your skin. I couldn’t leave the mask on for too long as the icy breeze whipping around the lagoon gave me ‘face freeze’. My skin felt good afterwards, though! The Blue Lagoon, Iceland
