The cause of Chantek’s death is not known, but zoo vets had been treating him for progressive heart disease. According to a Zoo Atlanta press release, Chantek had been placed on a low-sodium diet and was regularly monitored with cardiac ultrasounds, blood pressure readings and blood work. But Chantek was getting on in years; the press release states that orangutans are considered geriatric after the age of 35. We have also started a new unit of topic work on artists. As a year group the children decided that they would like to do some work on different artists and techniques. We have looked at the work by Vincent Van Gogh, Wassily Kandinsky, Georges Seurat and Pablo Picaso. Admittedly, she was a retired queen, but maybe that made this human stealing the show even more intriguing. It may enable us to raise a few more pounds or dollars here and there from donors that might have been persuaded to give to us because of something like an OBE; it will enable more meetings with senior government levels in Indonesia and I hope it will open up new doors for communication with the private sector.
